PHOTOGRAPHY AND KNOWLEDGE:

This workshop is about philosophy of Photography. Its leitmotif is "Does reality create images or do images create reality?". From the classical Western approaches about the nature of photographs, it will be analyzed how we know through images after the Postmodern times.

Here it comes a summary of the contents:

The more the new technologies get in our life, the more we relate with reality through images. Today, an important part of the knowledge we obtain comes from photographs. But, does Photography serve knowledge through its visual language? What kind of reality recreates Photography? Are we distancing from reality? Are the images our new reality? To rethink existing relations between Photography and knowledge is urgent when images are playing an important role in our life.

During this three/four/five-day workshop, IED faculty member Joan Villaplana discuss about existing relations between the photographer’s (artist’s) point of view and the reality of the spectator: What is the role of the photographic medium in this encounter between the image-maker and the observer?

During the first day, participants will learn about the abstract and controversial idea of “reality”, and how new technologies have managed to re-shape this concept, once and for all. On the second day, will learn Modern approaches to photography dealing with time. Finally, the Postmodern condition of image and new approaches towards a more suitable theory of photography aesthetics will be presented and discussed with the participants.

Who should apply:
